Spring Term 2019
What Gets Your Heart Pumping?
To kick off our new topic, we dissected a heart which was challenging but extremely rewarding. We were able to see the different structures of the heart and examine the arteries and the valves.
We have written a non-chronological report and discussed heart transplants as well as xenotransplantation. Benenson have debated the use of pig hearts in heart transplantation, where we carefully weighed the pros and cons.
As a class we created a heart model using balloons, straws and bowls. The 'heart,' which was a bowl with a balloon covering it, pumped water from one cup to the next. This mimics how the muscle contracts and how blood is pumped into and out of the heart.
We also recreated blood and developed our understanding of what blood does and how it flows.
We have been reading Pig Heart Boy in shared reading, which has influenced our writing and aided in our debates.
