Our Project during the Autumn term was “Towers, Tunnels and Turrets. We learned lots about castles including the different parts, rooms and who we might find living there. We enjoyed our trip to Colchester Castle where we were able to show off our knowledge and gain even more! We have enjoyed lots of art during this topic, including making our own room in a castle and recreating Paul Klee’s famous painting “The Castle and The Sun”. During our writing lessons we put what we had learned in our topic lessons to the test and created our own information texts full of useful facts about Castles and how the Romans used to live. We also rewrote the story of the tunnel which we were then able to share with our reception friends, we even enjoyed a biscuit and some juice with them.
Our project during the Spring term has been ‘Land Ahoy’. We have learnt lots about pirates and how they used to live. An expert came in to tell us all about what pirates used to eat and how our diets today have improved. We have learnt why eating healthily is so important. We have made our own story map to help us write our own stories, and have also developed our skills of writing about real life events. We have researched and written our own biographies and read them to an audience. Our topic sessions included learning about the different parts of a ship and creating our own ‘ancient’ treasure maps. We have also completed an art project where we sketched four drafts of a pirate ship. For each draft we got feedback from our friends about how we could make it even better. Our final pieces show the progress we have made.
Our project during the summer term is "How does your garden grown?" During our science lessons we will be looking at the plant life cycle and what a plant needs in order to grow. Using the instructions we have written during our English lessons we will also be planting our own sunflowers and watching them grow. In our art lessons we will be focusing on at Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" and tried to recreate this using either pastels, chalks or paints. As part of our summer term project we will be visiting Beth Chatto Gardens We will have the chance to explore the different wildlife and learn more about the plant life cycle.
