Our Project during the Autumn term was ‘Towers, Tunnels and Turrets’. We learned lots about castles including the different parts, rooms and the people we might find living there. We enjoyed our trip to Colchester Castle where we were able to show off our knowledge and gain even more! We have enjoyed lots of art during this topic, including making our own model castle and recreating Paul Klee’s famous painting ‘The Castle and The Sun’. During our writing lessons, we put what we had learned in our topic lessons to the test and created our own information texts full of useful facts about Castles and how the Romans used to live. We also wrote our own stories which we enjoyed reading to our Reception friends.
Our project during the Spring term has been ‘Land Ahoy’. We have learnt lots about pirates and how they used to live. An expert came in to tell us all about what pirates used to eat and how our diets today have improved. We have learnt why eating healthily is so important. We have made our own story map to help us write our own stories, and have also developed our skills of writing about real life events. We have researched and written our own biographies and read them to an audience. Our topic sessions included learning about the different parts of a ship and creating our own ‘ancient’ treasure maps. We have also completed an art project where we sketched four drafts of a pirate ship. For each draft, we got feedback from our friends about how we could make it even better. Our final pieces show the progress we have made.
Our project during the Summer term is 'The Scented Garden'. We have been busy learning about the conditions flowers need to grow in and we have even planted our own sunflowers! In science, we have carried out an experiment to investigate if we can change the colour of flower's petals by adding food colouring to the water. The results were amazing!
