As lovely as the rainforests are, there are problems.

One of them is called deforestation - read the information about deforestation by opening the PowerPoint below. Then, have a go at answering the questions in your workbooks.

  1. How much of the rainforest is being destroyed each minute?
  2. What gas do trees help to produce?
  3. Name three uses for the land once the trees have been cleared.
    •
    •
    •
  4. Why do animals become extinct?
  5. Why do you think that having too much carbon dioxide is dangerous?
  6. What happens to people when floods are extreme?
  7. Is deforestation a good idea? Why/Why not?
  8. When might cutting down trees be necessary?
  9. How do you think we could we avoid deforestation?

Writing

Today you will need your rhyming words that you wrote yesterday. We are going to use them to write some ideas for our rainforest rhyming poem. Remember, they are just ideas at this stage so they don't need to be perfect!

I've been having a go too, look...

My rhyming words:

rain

sun

light

trees

pain

fun

fight

bees

lane

one

height

knees

again

done

might

sees

remain

run

night

My ideas:

The howler monkeys sit at a leafy height

A terrible noise begins when they fight

On the top of the canopy, shines the sun

From endangered jaguars, I think I'll run

Notice how I've used a pair of rhyming words at the end of the lines - these are called rhyming couplets (because there are 2 of them). Use this format too, it works really well!

Also, notice how I've tried to use some of the vocabulary that we learned too.

Now, have a go at writing some of your own ideas in your workbooks.

Maths

Today in maths you will be continuing to understand units of time.

The learning will be about days, months and years

How many days in a month?

How many months in a year?

How many days in a year?

How many days in a leap year?

Do you know the Rhyme to learn about - How many months in a year? Find it out and write in your work book

Topic

Today in Topic you are going to be learning about the Plants that grow in different rainforests around the World.

Yesterday you looked at different Tropical Rainforests around the World and located them on a map.

  • Amazon Rainforest
  • Congo River Basin Rainforest
  • Daintree Rainforest
  • Madagascar Rainforest
  • Southeast Asian Rainforest

The activity today will be looking at the plants that are found in Tropical Rainforests around the World.

You need to look at the plants and link them to where they are found using the map (if you are unable to print the map out you can use an atlas and list the plants and where they are found)

HAVE A GO AT THE ACTIVITY FIRST BEFORE CHECKING WITH THE ANSWERS
