We went on a visit to St. Andrews Church. Although a very wet day, it was very interesting. We were shown around the graveyard and told that the graves with poppies were for fallen soldiers from the first world war. We were told that yew trees are a popular choice at churches and were used for their exceptional ability to make bows and arrows! The church has been extended over the last 1000 years and contains red bricks from Roman times. The children then explored the inside to which many of the children were quite knowledgeable about the areas of the church and answered many of the questions presented by Reverend Sue and Reverend Phillip. The children behaved very well and showed a good level of respect on the trip.
In Science, we have started to learn about trees. The parts of trees and went outside to look closer at trees and make some bark rubbings.
In music, we have been learning about untuned instruments and how we can find the pulse in a piece of music. We spoke about the instruments we thought we could hear in Radetsky's March by Johan Stouss Sr., and how the music made nus feel.
We had lots of fun in Yr1 when the Toy Workshop visited us. We explored older toys and discussed what we thought they were and what they were made of. We dug for forgotten toys and tried to work out what they were for or from. We also used our imagination to make up games and stories to use with the objects. In the afternoon, we had fun making our own versions of some of these popular toys from days gone by.
We learnt why we were making poppies for Remembrance Day. The children showed genuine interest and respect and asked questions. We joined as a a whole with the rest of Unity to stand in 2 minutes silence and we were proud of how the children conducted themselves during this time. Previously, we had also watched a short child friendly clip on Remembrance Day and made our poppies as below as part of a whole school display at Unity.
Wilberforce have enjoyed their second event run by the National Literacy Trust. The first set of activities were held at Unity where we were introduced to some of the residents through a powerpoint. We were provided the book 'Bloom' and made creative pictures of our favourite places in nature (park, beach, gardedn etc.) We really enjoyed our visit to Colonia Court Care Home for the second event. We and the residents enjoyed a funny story told by a story teller, sharing books and talking to each other. We finished the visit by making some garden bird houses with the residents, some of which will be hung in the gardens at the care home and some within our forest school area. We are looking forward to the third event taking place at Unity Primary Academy where we will be hosting activities in school for the residents. At each event, the children have been lucky to receive a brand new book of their choice to keep at home and share with their family. Look out for the third book your child chooses to keep and share with you!
Children in Year 1 have been learning how to paint using an app on the IPADS. The blocks of colour in primary colours have been created in the style of Piet Mondrian.
